Development of the bioeconomy in a sustainable manner can only take place when the sustainability assessment methods are working properly. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a suitable tool to determine the sustainability. This scientific method is commonly used and has, as long as the results are interpreted properly, a clear added value. In different sectors, however, contrasting methods and principles are being employed, which complicates interpretation and makes performing an LCA a laborious task.

In the European project ALIGNED, academic partners will investigate how to improve the LCA methodologies in five biobased sectors: construction, woodworking, textiles, chemistry, and pulp and paper. Five case studies at industrial partners are defined to ensure that the LCA methodologies are also applicable in practice. BTG has a unique role to function as a bridge between the academic world and industry.
