In its history of 30 years, BTG has successfully taken the fast pyrolysis technology - in close cooperation with BTG Bioliquids - from its infancy to TRL 9, with currently three factories running on industrial scale. In recent years, BTG has collaborated with leading European partners in the bioeconomy, such as the JRC, which resulted in major steps forward in enhancing data on bio-based products, industries and markets, giving everyone involved in the bioeconomy new insights.

BTG has launched its new Bio2Match tool that matches biomass crops with suitable conversion technologies. The Bio2Match tool uses data on biomass properties and technology requirements to guide the user to the optimal match between biomass resources and conversion technologies.

Position on the EU Fit For 55 Climate Package Proposal

The Advanced Biofuels Coalition LSB, representing the leading companies in the advanced biofuels industry, strongly supports the EU target for climate-neutrality by 2050 and the need for more ambitious 2030 intermediate targets. We believe that our sector will play an important role in achieving the EU targets. However, while we recognize that advanced biofuels have been given a growing role within the proposed revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), the advanced biofuels industry is concerned about the overall framework conditions, growing regulatory  complexity and the impact on investment planning.

BIOFIT Conference
In January 2022, the BIOFIT project will hold its final conference. The event will take place online as series of conference sessions spread over three days.

The timing is as follows:
• Fossil firing power and CHP: 18 January 2022 (13:00 – 15:00 CET)
• Refineries: 18 January 2022 (15:15 – 17:00 CET)
• Pulp and paper: 19 January 2022 (09:00 – 11:00 CET)
• First-generation biofuels: 19 January 2022 (11:15 – 13:00 CET)

BTG Biomass Technology Group and ABATO Motoren B.V. (both based in The Netherlands) have reached an important milestone in their efforts to modify an internal combustion (diesel) engine to enable the use of Fast-Pyrolysis Bio-Oil (FPBO) as fuel, with their novel engine operating for more than 500 continuous hours on FPBO to which 10% ethanol was added. This achievement, realised within the Horizon 2020 SmartCHP project, was followed by a successful 3-day continuous run on pure FPBO (e.g. without any additive).

Production is now underway at Pyrocell's groundbreaking plant in Gävle. The new and pioneering plant converts sawdust into bio-oil. Pyrocell, which is jointly owned by Setra and Preem, was formed in 2018 based on the business concept of producing bio-oil from sawdust. Production at the groundbreaking plant is now underway – and is the country's first pyrolysis oil plant for biofuel.

Pyrocell's plant is located next to Setra Kastet sawmill in Gävle. There, sawdust, which is a residual product in Setra's industrial process, is converted into non-fossil pyrolysis oil. The pyrolysis oil is then refined into renewable diesel and petrol at Preem's refinery in Lysekil.

In April 2021, BTG met online with project partners BBEPP and nova-institute to kick off their new 2-year Tech4Biowaste project. Tech4Biowaste aims to provide the bio-based industry a complete overview of existing and emerging technologies for bio-waste utilisation and valorisation. The Tech4Biowaste technology database will meet the specific needs of both technology providers and technology users.
